King: A Filmed Record… Montgomery to Memphis

Monday, Jan 15, 2024 at 1:00 pm

Location: Redstone Theater

Dir. Joseph L. Mankiewicz and Sidney Lumet. 1970, 182 mins. DCP. Following Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. from 1955 to 1968, documenting his rise from regional activist to world-renowned leader of the Civil Rights movement, King: A Filmed Record… Montgomery to Memphis is a monumental achievement in archival filmmaking. Rare footage of King’s speeches, protests, and arrests are interspersed with scenes of other high-profile supporters and opponents of the cause, punctuated by heartfelt testimonials by some of Hollywood’s biggest stars. Originally presented as a one-night-only special event on March 20, 1970, before being truncated for wider circulation, the original film has since been restored by the Library of Congress, in association with Richard Kaplan, utilizing film elements provided by the Museum of Modern Art. Nominated for an Academy Award and admitted to the National Film Registry, King is an essential documentary, and it remains unrivaled among feature films in detail and scope.

Tickets: $15 / $11 senior and students / $9 youth (ages 3–17) / free for MoMI members at the Senior/Student level and above. Order tickets. Please pick up tickets at the Museum’s admissions desk upon arrival. All seating is general admission.
