Dir. Michael Snow, 1971, 180 mins. 16mm. One of the monumental achievements of avant-garde cinema, La région centrale is a three-hour long film that Michael Snow shot during a single day atop a remote plateau in Northern Quebec with a specially constructed apparatus that has the camera constantly circling and tilting. “He forces us to rethink not just cinema but the universe,” wrote critic Louis Marcorelles in Le monde. For Chantal Akerman, who watched the film at Anthology Film Archives repeatedly over the course of a day with Babette Mangolte, the experience was life-changing. “The sensory experience I underwent was extraordinarily powerful and physical. It was a revelation for me, that you could make a film without telling a story.”
