Little Ethiopia: A Live Story Development Exercise with Joe Bini and Maya Hawke (Co-presented with Sundance Institute’s Art of Nonfiction)

In this live cinema performance, Maya Hawke and Joe Bini use personal videos and photographs, archival film clips, and repurposed excerpts from feature films they have edited, to enter into a dialogue with each other using film as their common language. Using a significant day in their lives as a launching point, the piece explores the intersection of art and life, looks into the creative process of developing an idea for a film, and touches on themes of love, sexuality, and the distrust between women and men in the #metoo era.

Joe Bini is best known for his 25-plus year career as a film editor, working in both fiction and non-fiction forms. He had a 20-year collaboration with Werner Herzog that resulted in 27 films. He has also worked with Lynne Ramsay, Andrea Arnold, Nick Broomfield, and others. Films he edited have won numerous awards internationally, including six Cannes Film Festival premieres. He has an Emmy award for non-fiction writing and is developing an episodic narrative series. He co-wrote and directed A Thousand Thoughts, a film/theater piece about the Kronos Quartet that debuted at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival and is currently in performance worldwide.

Maya Hawke is the creator of the interactive social media video novels Box of Birds and Currency of Despair. As a film editor, she has cut ten feature-length documentaries, including two with Werner Herzog. She has edited Apple commercials for Errol Morris and a critically acclaimed series for the BBC about the Assad family of Syria. She was an advisor at the Sundance Edit and Story Lab 2018, and a Sundance Nonfiction Directors Residency Fellow 2018. Maya is a New Zealand-American, grew up in Southeast Asia and now lives in London.
