The smash sequel/prequel to the 2008 jukebox musical brings back much of the original cast, including Amanda Seyfried’s Sophie and her three dashing could-be fathers—Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, and Stellan Skarsgard—then adds some new heavy artillery in the person of Cher, playing Sophie’s age-defying grandmother. Back on the island of Kalokairi there is mourning and merrymaking afoot as Sophie prepares to reopen the Hotel Bella Donna after her mother’s death, an occasion for reminiscence, romance, and a heaping helping of ABBA, including a rousing full-cast rendition of “Super Trouper.”
