Matter Out of Place

Location: Bartos Screening Room

Dir. Nikolaus Geyrhalter. 2022, 100 mins. DCP. In the films of Austrian director Nikolaus Geyrhalter (Our Daily Bread, Homo Sapiens), big ideas and tectonic developments are made visible, graspable, and riveting. His latest work considers the copious waste generated by human endeavors: material populating environments where it doesn’t belong, aka “matter out of place. The film presents manifestations of this all around the globe, from the mountain slopes of Switzerland to the coast of Albania, from technological and architectural solutions that intervene in the landscape to spaces overwhelmed and redefined by societal refuse. Geyrhalter films from a remove that powerfully conveys scale and through a static frame that invites active viewership and contemplation. This singular viewing experience engenders both awe and existential unease, aesthetic fascination and discomfiting implications for the earth’s future. An Icarus Films release.
