May December—with Todd Haynes in Person

Saturday, Dec 2, 2023 at 3:00 pm

Location: Redstone Theater

Todd Haynes to appear in person for introduction and a post-screening Q&A with producers Christine Vachon and Pamela Koffler

This screening is free for MoMI members! Tickets available here.

Dir. Todd Haynes. 2023, 113 mins. 35mm. With Natalie Portman, Julianne Moore, Charles Melton, Cory Michael Smith, Elizabeth Yu, Gabriel Chung, Piper Curda. In Haynes’s brilliant latest film, a tricky and gripping dark comic creation, Portman plays Elizabeth, a popular television actress who has arrived in Savannah, Georgia, where she will meet and get to know Gracie (Moore), a tabloid celebrity she has been cast to play in a movie. As the two women—each used to a life in front of the camera—circle each other with increasing distrust, secrets and resentments rise to the surface, leading to a reckoning between Gracie and her husband (Melton), who had a crucial part to play in Gracie’s decades-old scandal. Portman, Moore, and Melton embody these hard-to-read characters with invigorating subtlety and humanity, while Haynes uses a potentially sensational subject to make vivid inquiries into American culture, with its obsessions with celebrity and scandal, and the precarious foundation of family itself.

Image Book
Dir. Todd Haynes. 2023, 17 mins. DCP. With Julianne Moore, Natalie Portman, Charles Melton, Elizabeth Yu, Gabriel Chung. When asked to create something for the “Où en êtes-vous?” (“Where Are You?”) collection commissioned and posed by the Centre Pompidou in Paris, Haynes’s response was this behind-the-scenes film made during the production of May December, which evokes Ingmar Bergman’s Persona and Jean-Luc Godard’s Two or Three Things I Know About Her in its metacinematic exploration of identity.

Tickets: $15 / $11 senior and students / $9 youth (ages 3–17) / free for MoMI members at the Senior/Student level and above. Order tickets. Please pick up tickets at the Museum’s admissions desk upon arrival. All seating is general admission. Review safety protocols before your visit.
