SCREENING

Tribute to Ryuichi Sakamoto: Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence

Sunday, Apr 30 at 5:30 pm

Location: Redstone Theater

Dir. Nagisa Oshima. 1983, 123 mins. 35mm. With David Bowie, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Tom Conti, Takeshi Kitano. Oshima’s oneiric prisonerofwar drama stars the Olympian pair of Bowie and Sakamoto, as, respectively, an unruly British soldier transferred to an internment camp and the camp commandant, a martinet whose neurotic adherence to the Bushido code masks a secret sense of shame and eventually fuels an erotic obsession with the rebellious Englishman. Rounding out the cast are the contrastingly serene pair of Conti as the titular Lt. Col. John Lawrence and Kitano, in his first screen role, as the incongruously cheerful Sgt. Gengo Hara. Scored by Sakamoto himself in his first music composition for the cinema, the film’s hypnotic soundtrack is an achievement in itself, including one of the most iconic themes in modern cinema.

Tickets: $15 / $11 senior and students / $9 youth (ages 3–17) / discounted for MoMI members ($7–$11). Order tickets. Please pick up tickets at the Museum’s admissions desk upon arrival. All seating is general admission. Review safety protocols before your visit.
