Mind Game

Location: Bartos Screening Room

Dir. Masaaki Yuasa. Japan. 2004, 103 mins. DCP. In Japanese with English subtitles. Masaaki Yuasa’s acclaimed debut feature is a thrilling animated journey through the hopes and regrets of an aspiring manga artist. Nishi seeks to become worthy of his childhood sweetheart, Myon, but triggered by a gunshot in an Osaka yakitori bar, he embarks on an adventure to the afterlife and back, and into the belly of a whale—along with Myon and her sister, Yan. An eclectic mashup of styles that samples mecha anime, Looney Tunes, and digitally painted live action, and rendered with brilliant colors evoking 1960s animation, Mind Game is a hallucinogenic dive into the psyche of one of Japan’s most exciting contemporary animators. Based on Robin Nishi’s underground comic. View trailer.
