Dir. Chantal Akerman. 1977, 85 mins. DCP. Tableaux and tracking shots of New York City, in all its 1970s squalor, are juxtaposed with voiceover of letters from Akerman’s mother back home. This exquisite, deceptively simple film perfectly captures a young artist’s desire for independence from the eternal pull of maternal ties.
