Dir. João Pedro Rodrigues. Portugal. 2000, 87 mins. DCP. With Ricardo Meneses, André Barbosa, Beatriz Torcato. At night, while the city of Lisbon is fast asleep, strapping Sergio (Meneses) works as a garbage man, up to his neck in filth and solitude. When a new motorcycle-riding neighbor moves to town, Sergio makes him his object of obsession, plunging him even deeper into the abject and perverse: bathroom cruising, a shower head cord wrapped around the neck, the void of a black latex gimp suit. Portuguese filmmaker Rodrigues dives deep into social and erotic alienation, and finds in queerness an embrace of our most feral human impulses. O Fantasma offers a compelling collision of eros and displacement.

Tickets: $15 / $11 senior and students / $9 youth (ages 3–17) / discounted for MoMI members ($7–$11). Order tickets. Please pick up tickets at the Museum’s admissions desk upon arrival. All seating is general admission. Review safety protocols before your visit.
