Dir. Kathryn Bigelow. 1991, 122 mins. 35mm print courtesy of the Phil Blankenship collection at the Academy Film Archive. With Patrick Swayze, Keanu Reeves, Gary Busey, Lori Petty. Two of the great Hollywood movie stars of the 1990s—a sun-bleached Patrick Swayze at the height of his success and a cherubic Keanu Reeves on the cusp of his—play a gonzo skydiving criminal and the rookie undercover FBI agent assigned to catch him and his band of bank robbers, called the “Ex-Presidents” for their rubber disguises. As bonkers as it sounds, and ten times as fun, Kathryn Bigelow gives every heist set piece an adrenaline jolt, and Reeves and Swayze have a homoerotic ball as the best of enemies who get in too deep.
