Dir Lewis Milestone. 1959, 97 mins. 35mm. With Gregory Peck, Harry Guardino, Rip Torn, George Peppard, James Edwards, Woody Strode. In the waning days of the Korean War, with cease-fire negotiations in progress, the U.S. Army’s 7th Infantry Division is sent to recapture Pork Chop Hill from Chinese and North Korean forces. Led by Lieutenant Joe Clemons (Peck), they split into three platoons, each suffering devastating casualties en route to taking the hill trench by trench, until just a few men are left to defend what they’ve won. Among a murderer’s row of emerging young thespians, including fellow African-American trailblazer James Edwards, Strode plays Pvt. Franklin, a jittery, edge-of-AWOL soldier fully aware that he’s on a suicide mission. Franklin’s (almost) last stand, in which he’s backed into a cave with a machine gun aimed at his white superior officer, resenting every second of his ordeal as well as the injustices to which he’s destined to return, is a knockout.

Tickets: $15 / $11 senior and students / $9 youth (ages 3–17) / discounted for MoMI members ($7–$11). Order tickets. Please pick up tickets at the Museum’s admissions desk upon arrival. All seating is general admission. Review safety protocols before your visit.
