In Mario Van Peebles’s freewheeling revisionist western, five Buffalo Soldiers return to the States from the Spanish-American War with gold in their sacks and everyone from lawmen, the Army, and the KKK on their tail. Unapologetic in its deconstruction of historical racist tropes while also exuberantly contemporary, Posse mixes together four decades of Black stars, including ’90s rappers Big Daddy Kane and Tone Loc; L.A. Law’s Blair Underwood; blaxploitation queen Pam Grier; Mario’s legendary father, Melvin; and Strode, who graces the film’s coda—offering some nice symmetry with his prologue-only turn in Once Upon a Time in the West. It was his second-to-last film, and the final to be released during his lifetime. (Sam Raimi’s The Quick and the Dead would be released one year after his death in 1994.)
