SCREENING

Rebecca

Ongoing

Dir. Alfred Hitchcock. 1940, 130 mins. DCP. With Joan Fontaine, Laurence Olivier, Judith Anderson. Hitchcock’s adaptation of Daphne du Maurier’s gothic novel is one of Hollywood’s great dark romances. Fontaine gives an iconic performance as a plain young woman who enters into a marriage with the wildly wealthy widower Maxim de Winter (Olivier), only to find him emotionally haunted by his first wife—whose memory is being kept too alive by mysterious housekeeper Mrs. Danvers (the unforgettable Anderson). An elegant and eerie triumph top to bottom, Rebecca was Hitchcock’s first film in America, and it won the Best Picture Oscar.
