Searchers

Location: Bartos Screening Room

With Pacho Velez and special guests Disnie Sebastien, Mar Wolf, Ruddy Harootian, and Marion McCue de Velezin person

Dir. Pacho Velez. 2021, 81 mins. Drawing on more than 75 encounters with New Yorkers of different ages, races, genders, and sexual interests, Searchers is a portrait of the city as seen through the eyes of people looking for love on various dating apps. Humorous and touching, hopeful and wary, the film employs an ingenious formal device in which subjects face the camera and seem to be scrolling and swiping the projected screen itself. The latest work of creative nonfiction by the chameleonic Pacho Velez (Manakamana, The Reagan Show, The American Sector), Searchers debuted at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival and will have its New York “in-theater” debut with this screening. It will be preceded by the short film, Mr. Yellow Sweatshirt (Dir. Pacho Velez, Yoni Brook, 2017, 8 mins), which takes a birds-eye view of a NYC subway turnstile, capturing the movement and transience of commuters, and in particular one nameless man who’s stymied at the gate.
