The Shattered Mind

Friday, Sep 22, 2023 at 4:30 pm

Location: Redstone Theater

With director Jade Bryan in person

Dir. Jade Bryan. 2014, 49 mins. The NYC Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities, the NYC Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment, and the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs invite you to a screening of The Shattered Mind (PG-13) followed by a discussion with director Jade Bryan. Like other events supported by MOPD and partners, this screening recognizes and celebrates relevant, thought-provoking programming by, for, and about the disability community.

Written, directed, and produced by deaf Black American filmmaker Jade Bryan, The Shattered Mind is about Zhane Rain, a teenager who struggles to find herself, questioning whether she was born deaf, and seeking to understand her recurring nightmares. The first feature about a deaf Black American family, the film has received numerous awards and has been featured in 39 film festivals throughout the world. As described by Liz Belilovskaya in Untitled Magazine: “This is not a silent film, nor one that keeps the hearing population in the dark, it’s a story told in the same way most stories are told—through images, music, and a great narrative that makes up the crucial component of good storytelling.”

Accessibility information: Wheelchair accessible seating is available. ASL interpretation and CART will be provided during the speaking parts of the event, and live open audio description will be provided during the film. The film itself is captioned. If you have other requests, please indicate them on the registration form or reach out to Crystal Rivera at [email protected] or by calling 347-446-6306 at least 72 hours before the event.

Free with RSVP. Click here to RSVP for this event.
