Sloan Science & Film Shorts: The Chef and A Hole

Thursday, Jun 8, 2023 at 4:00 pm

Location: Bartos Screening Room

Please note: this program has been canceled and will be rescheduled at a later date. The Museum will be closed on this day, June 8, due to poor air-quality conditions.

Join us for a free presentation of two short narrative films selected from the Sloan Science & Film Teacher’s Guide, a science-focused teaching framework for short films, all of which have received awards from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation for their depictions of scientific themes or characters. The two films address the intersection of technology and society. Hao Zheng’s Student Academy Award–winning The Chef explores the relationship between human beings and artificial intelligence as it becomes more mainstream. Molly Flynn Murphy’s animated short A Hole takes a darkly comedic approach to the techno-optimism surrounding global warming. The screening will feature a presentation by Curator of Science and Technology Sonia Epstein about the resources that the free Teacher’s Guide provides to accompany these films and 50 more. More than 80 such films are available for free on the Museum’s online publication scienceandfilm.org.
