Location: Redstone Theater

Introduced by Jake Perlin and Michael Koresky

Dir. Vincente Minnelli. 1958, 137 mins. 35mm from Park Circus. With Frank Sinatra, Shirley MacLaine, Dean Martin, Martha Hyer, Arthur Kennedy. Minnelli’s phenomenally directed and acted tale of rootlessness in post–World War II America stars Sinatra as a war veteran and former writer who has fallen into alcoholism, and who returns to his Indiana hometown to find nothing is quite as he remembered it. Martin is the unrepentant gambler whom he befriends, and MacLaine is heartbreaking in a signature early role as a wayward woman who limps after him, hoping he will love her. Easily one of the great American melodramas of the 1950s, this CinemaScope adaptation of James Jones’s novel builds to a frenetic carnival climax that is among Minnelli’s finest achievements. The film inspired Anderson when conceiving Asteroid City in its depiction of battle-scarred men coming home and finding a wounded, lost, and irrevocably changed mid-century American landscape.
