Tales of Terror
Dir. Roger Corman. 1962, 89 mins. 35mm. With Vincent Price, Peter Lorre, Basil Rathbone, Joyce Jameson, Debra Paget. Murder! Black Cats! Hypnotism! Edgar Allan Poe’s range as a writer, specifically his dark humor, is captured and paired well with Corman’s own cynical comedic streak in this star-studded anthology adapting three of the author’s eeriest tales: “Morella, “The Black Cat,” and “The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar.”

The Haunted Palace
Dir. Roger Corman. 1963, 87 mins. 35mm. With Vincent Price, Debra Paget, Lon Chaney Jr, Elisha Cook Jr. In 1765, damned warlock Joseph Curwen (Price) curses the New England village Arkham before being burned alive. Centuries later, Charles Ward (also Price) arrives in Arkham, having inherited his great-grandfather’s mansion. The warlock’s great old curse soon seizes Charles, and awakens a sleeping evil in his blood. Borrowing only Poe’s poem of the same name, The Haunted Palace is notable as the first ever adaptation of an H. P. Lovecraft story, the weirdness of which is handled well by Corman’s atmospheric shots and Price’s memorable dual performance.
