Dir. James Cameron. 1989, 170 mins. U.S. 4K DCP. With Ed Harris, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, Michael Biehn. Cameron has re-released his beloved underwater sci-fi adventure in a newly restored, remastered version of the acclaimed extended director’s cut. A team of civilian divers on a prototype underwater oil-drilling rig are pressed into service by the U.S. navy in a rescue effort for a sunken nuclear submarine. The mission involves an uneasy blend of wonder, discovery and conflict as the navy supervisor begins to have paranoid ideas about what is in the abyss. Creating the emotional center of the film are Harris and Mastrantonio as Bud and Lindsey, an estranged married couple who rekindle their profound romantic connection while deep at the bottom of the ocean.
