The Eight Mountains

Adolescents Pietro and Bruno meet one summer in the Italian Alps. Pietro’s on summer vacation with his family; Bruno is native to the mountains, where playmates and his own family are scarce. Only children, they become like brothers, and to Pietro’s parents Bruno becomes like another son. But after Bruno is suddenly sent off to work, the boys separate for many years. Reunited as adults, they tentatively forge a new friendship in the mountains, one that will prove to sustain them through life’s changes, ruptures, and battles with personal demons that only they truly understand about each other. Adapted from the Italian novel Le Otto Montagne by Paolo Cognetti, The Eight Mountains has a throwback epic scale, spanning decades in its protagonist’s lives and set in some of the most beautiful—and unyielding—vistas on earth, and encompassing a full spectrum of emotions and experiences. It also features two knockout performances by the magnetic Marinelli (Martin Eden) and the rugged Borghi. About the Filmmakers:

Felix van Groeningen is a Belgian film director and screenwriter. Van Groeningen made his directorial debut with Steve + Sky (2004), which won Best Film and Best Composer at the 2004 Joseph Plateau Awards. The director’s breakthrough came with his fourth film, The Broken Circle Breakdown (2012), which won the César Award for Best Foreign Film, the 2013 Lux Prize, and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and three European Film Awards, for Best Film, Best Director and Best Screenwriter. The Eight Mountains won a Jury Prize award at Cannes Film Festival. Charlotte Vandermeersch is a Belgian director and actress. In 2011, Vandermeersch wrote a version of the screenplay of The Broken Circle Breakdown (2012) with her partner Felix van Groeningen. In 2022, The Eight Mountains won a Jury Prize award at Cannes Film Festival. She has played in numerous theater productions, and played lead roles in the TV series Day and Night (2010), the movie Turquaze (2010), and the TV series Deadline 14/10 (2012). In 2016, she played a leading role in Belgicaby Felix van Groeningen; from 2012 to 2020, she was affiliated with the theater group LAZARUS.
