Dir. Martin Scorsese. 1982, 109 mins. DCP. With Robert De Niro, Jerry Lewis, Sandra Bernhard, Diahnne Abbott, Shelley Hack. Shot entirely on location in New York, Scorsese’s trenchant satire about fandom and the pursuit of fame features Robert De Niro as Rupert Pupkin, a delusional aspiring comic who enlists an overzealous fan in his deranged scheme to kidnap a talk-show host, brilliantly played by Jerry Lewis. A surprising shift in tone after Raging Bull, The King of Comedy is now widely recognized as one of Scorsese’s masterworks and has proven to be especially prophetic about the dissolving boundaries between celebrity culture and daily life. The performances of De Niro, Lewis, and Bernhard remain among the most beloved in the director’s oeuvre, though none of them were nominated, even after De Niro and Lewis’s BAFTA nominations and Bernhard’s win from the National Society of Film Critics.

Tickets: $15 / $11 senior and students / $9 youth (ages 3–17) / discounted for MoMI members ($7–$11). Please pick up tickets at the Museum’s admissions desk upon arrival. All seating is general admission. Review safety protocols before your visit.
