Dir. George Cukor. 1940, 112 mins. 35mm. With Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn, James Stewart, Ruth Hussey. Three of Hollywood’s greatest stars teamed up in this enduring classic that revolves around Hepburn’s Tracy Lord, a high society divorcée whose second wedding is disrupted by her first husband (Grant) and a cynical tabloid reporter (Stewart, who won the Best Actor Oscar for his note-perfect comic frustration) who falls for her charms. A tremendous box office hit, the film revived Hepburn’s flagging movie career in spectacular fashion, gave Grant and Stewart two of their juiciest comic roles, and stands as the platonic ideal of the quick-witted comedy of remarriage one summons when recalling Golden Age Hollywood.
