Location: Bartos Screening Room

Dir. Wolfgang Reitherman, John Lounsbery, Art Stevens. U.S., 1977, 77 mins. 35mm. With the voices of Bob Newhart, Geraldine Page, Ava Gabor, Joe Flynn. Among the most charming and vividly realized animated features of Disney’s post–Golden Age, this hit adaptation of a series of books by Margery Sharp follows the adventures of the Rescue Aid Society, a group of mice helping international victims in peril—in this case a little girl named Penny who has been kidnapped by the evil Madame Medusa to help secure a precious diamond. The first film by a new generation of newly trained animators working at the studio led by Don Bluth, who would leave Disney and spin off to become his own distinct brand in the eighties, the raucous and exciting The Rescuers boasts the vocal stylings of the great Geraldine Page as the villainous Madame Medusa, and Oscar-nominated music by the legendary Sammy Fain. (Released June 22, 1977)
