The Shakedown

Saturday, Dec 10 at 12:30 pm

Location: Redstone Theater

Dir. William Wyler. 1929, 70 mins. Restored 4K DCP. With James Murray, Barbara Kent, Jack Hanlon. Murray (best known for his star turn in King Vidor’s The Crowd) plays the fall guy in a traveling fight-throwing scheme, but when he arrives at the site of the ring’s next con, a small oil town named Boonton, he encounters a young woman (Kent) and orphan rascal (Hanlon) who open up a path toward his own protestant reformation. Featuring impressive, dramatic use of such classic sites of American fiction as the smoke-filled pool hall and the rig-pocked oil field, this Universal boxing picture, based on a story discovered by Wyler’s brother Robert, finds the thenyoung director honing his considerable skills as a metteur en scène. Keep your eyes peeled for John Huston, Wyler’s close friend, as an uncredited extra.

Tickets: $15 / $11 senior and students / $9 youth (ages 3–17) / discounted for MoMI members ($7–$11). Order tickets. Please pick up tickets at the Museum’s admissions desk upon arrival. All seating is general admission. Review safety protocols before your visit.
