The Silence of the Lambs with Kristi Zea

In Jonathan Demme’s critical and commercial sensation The Silence of the Lambs, Jodie Foster stars as Clarice Starling, a top student at the FBI’s training academy. In an attempt to get ahead of grisly serial killer “Buffalo Bill,” Special Agent Jack Crawford (Glenn) sends Starling to the imprisoned Dr. Hannibal Lector (Hopkins), a brilliant psychiatrist serving life behind bars for various acts of murder and cannibalism. A riveting psychological thriller turned cultural touchstone, The Silence of the Lambs won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Actor, Actress, and Directing.

About Kristi Zea

Born in New York City, Zea has been acclaimed for her work as a production designer, costume designer, and producer of major feature films. Zea was production designer for Martin Scorsese’s The Departed, Goodfellas, and New York Stories. For Jonathan Demme, she designed The Silence of the Lambs, The Manchurian Candidate, Beloved, and Philadelphia. Additional production design and second unit directing credits include Sam Mendes’s Revolutionary Road (for which she was nominated for an Academy Award), Neil Jordan’s The Brave One, and James L. Brooks’s Broadcast News.

Following an education at Middlebury College and receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree from Columbia University School of General Studies, Zea became a costume designer for Alan Parker’s Fame and Shoot the Moon, and Academy Award–winning film Terms of Endearment. Zea also produced Brooks’s As Good As It Gets.

For television, Zea’s designs were seen in Black Nativity, HBO’s The Leftovers, NBC’s American Odyssey and The Comedian. Zea directed Anna Deavere Smith in HBO’s Notes From the Field, based on Smith’s award winning play. Currently, Zea is designing NBC’s New Amsterdam (2018). Zea’s first documentary, Everybody Knows… Elizabeth Murray, which she produced and directed, premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2016.
