The Sound of Music in 70mm

Ongoing

Introduced by author Tom Santopietro

Presented in collaboration with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences

Dir. Robert Wise. 1965, 174 mins. New 70mm print from Academy Film Archive & 20th Century Fox. With Julie Andrews, Christopher Plummer. In celebration of the film’s 50th anniversary, the Museum and the Academy co-present this special screening of a new 70mm print of The Sound of Music from preservation work done by 20th Century Fox and the Academy Film Archive. Wise’s spectacular adaptation of the Rodgers and Hammerstein Broadway show is one of cinema’s greatest musical extravaganzas. Julie Andrews gives an iconic performance as a novice nun whose life changes when sent to care for the bratty children of a handsome military captain (Plummer) on the heels of World War II. The Sound of Music bursts with unforgettable songs and glorious CinemaScope images shot on location in Salzburg, Austria. Tom Santopietro, author of The Sound of Music Story (2015, St. Martin’s Press), will introduce the film.
