The Tales of Hoffmann

Saturday, Jan 22 at 4:00 pm

Location: Redstone Theater

Dirs. Michael Powell, Emeric Pressburger. United Kingdom. 1951, 138 mins. 4K DCP. With Moira Shearer, Léonide Massine, Robert Rounseville, Pamela Brown, Ludmilla Tchérina, Ann Ayars. Singled out by both Martin Scorsese and George A. Romero as a major influence on their own work, this 1951 Powell and Pressburger masterpiece is a gloriously synthetic ballet rendition of Jacques Offenbach’s 1881 fantastic opera. An anthology of macabre and romantic adventures, recounted by the fabulist Hoffmann (Rounseville), the film features the effervescent Shearer (The Red Shoes), alongside fellow dancers Massine and Tchérina and opera singer Ayars. This dazzling 4K restoration undertaken in 2015 was overseen by Scorsese and Thelma Schoonmaker Powell.
