The Wiz Family Day

Saturday, May 21, 2022 at 12:00 pm

Museum admission is FREE for kids ages 12 and under—all day 11:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m.

Kids under 12 do not have to reserve a ticket.

(Children must be accompanied by an adult.)

Join us for a family day packed with fun and educational experiences for children of all ages related to the classic 1978 movie musical The Wiz. This jazzy, family-friendly retelling of The Wizard of Oz was filmed at the Astoria Studios (now Kaufman Astoria Studios), located directly next to the Museum. Explore the Museum’s collection of original artifacts from The Wiz, and hear stories about the film’s creation. Families and youth of all ages can also enjoy The Wiz face-painting by The Cheeky Chipmunk, and reenact a dreamy scene from the film in our media lab. From 3:00–4:30 p.m., puppeteer Brian Carson will lead a monitor session demo in which families can join Silly Willy for a walk down the yellow brick road.

The day kicks off with a 12:00 p.m. matinee screening of The Wiz in the Museum’s Redstone Theater, introduced by Ms. Renee Brailsford, one of the original dancers in the film. The Wiz features a dazzling, all-Black cast, and features iconic images of 1970s New York City, transforming the ruins of the 1964 World’s Fair in Flushing Meadows Corona Park into a magical cityscape and the World Trade Center into the Emerald City. Museum admission for children 12 and under is free all day!
