Dir. Mitchell Leisen. 1946, 122 mins. 35mm.With Olivia de Havilland, Mary Anderson, Ronald Culver. Olivia de Havilland won her first Academy Award as a woman who must give up her child in this intricately plotted, intensely poignant—and rarely screened—melodrama that spans two world wars and takes a mature view of the social strictures put on women in the first half of the 20th century. Needless to say, de Havilland (a Hollywood living legend to this day at 102) is magnificent in her complexly drawn, Stella Dallas-esque role, all the way to the unforgettable tear-jerking ending.
