SCREENING, NEW RELEASE

Tori and Lokita

Friday, Apr 7 at 7:15 pm

Location: Bartos Screening Room

Dirs. Jean-Pierre & Luc Dardenne. Belgium/France. 2022, 83 mins. In French with English subtitles. DCP. With Pablo Schils, Mbundu Joely, Charlotte De Bruyne, Tijmen Govaerts, Alban Ukaj, Marc Zinga. The latest by the Dardenne brothers (The Son, The Kid with a Bike) is an angry, intimate account of the harrowing odyssey of two African refugees, a young boy and teenage girl, who have come to care for each other like brother and sister, even as Belgian authorities question the legitimacy of their blood relation. To earn enough money to obtain Lokita fake immigration papers, the two work as couriers for a dissolute pot dealer, while being forced to kick back most of their earnings to the smuggler who brought them to the country and pressured to send money to Lokita’s family in Benin. As their situation grows increasingly desperate, Lokita makes a fateful decision. A characteristically absorbing and detailed depiction of mettle, devotion, and resourcefulness under the most dehumanizing circumstances, Tori and Lokita is as urgent and timely a statement as the Dardennes have ever given us, arriving at a devastating conclusion, a call to action that rings out far beyond the cinema. Recipient of the 75th Anniversary Prize at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival. A Sideshow and Janus Films Release.
