Up the Lazy River & One More Time

Location: Bartos Screening Room

U.S. Premiere Screening

With Manfred Kirchheimer in person

Up the Lazy River
Dir. Manfred Kirchheimer. 2021, 33 mins. DCP.

One More Time
Dir. Manfred Kirchheimer. 2021, 17 mins. DCP.

These two films represent the climax and coda of the urban suite Kirchheimer began with 2018’s Dream of a City. In Up the Lazy River, Kirchheimer takes us back to late fifties New York for a final trip through the lost illusions of a city and civilization. In One More Time, Kirchheimer poignantly intercuts our last glimpses of this black-and-white New York with color outtakes from his 1981 classic Stations of the Elevated, depicting a different yet equally distant moment in the life of the city. These sublime films, both pitched at greater and more reflective removes than their predecessors, finally express the contingent status of all human eras. Post-screening Q&A with co-producer Jake Perlin.
