Dir. Jordan Peele. USA. 2019, 121 mins.DCP. With Lupita Nyong’o, Winston Duke. Somewhere along the Northern California coast, Adelaide Wilson (Nyong’o) returns to her beachside childhood home with her husband, Gabe (Duke), and their two children for an idyllic summer getaway. Haunted by an inexplicable and unresolved trauma from her youth and unsettled by a string of eerie coincidences, Adelaide grows increasingly paranoid that something wicked this way comes. With this terrifying and intensely symbolic film, which cleverly evokes the DuBoisian concept of “double-consciousness,” Peele (Get Out, Nope) cemented his status as the premier horror director of contemporary Hollywood.
