Opening night of the Imagine Science Film Festival

Dir. Alejandro Loayza Grisi. 2022, 87 mins. DCP. In Spanish and Quechua with English subtitles. Set against the majestic backdrop of the arid Bolivian highlands, Utama shows us the resilience of an elderly Quechua couple who safeguard family traditions threatened by drought and water shortage caused by climate change. The 15th annual Imagine Science Film Festival kicks off its feature lineup at Museum of the Moving Image, one of the festival’s first homes. Alejandro Loayza Grisi’s Bolivian debut feature embraces the spirit of the Science New Wave, the theme of this year’s festival, which celebrates artistic and scientific experimentation across disciplines and cultures. Utama is a visually jaw-dropping film shot by award-winning cinematographer Barbara Alvarez (Lucrecia Martel’s The Headless Woman) and the winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival. It is Bolivia’s Oscar submission for the 95th Academy Awards.

Presented in partnership with the Imagine Science Film Festival
