With David France in person

Dir. David France. USA. 2020, 107 mins. DCP. The latest film by Academy Award–nominated director David France (How to Survive a Plague) is a powerful and eye-opening documentary about a group of activists risking their lives to confront the ongoing anti-LGBTQ persecution in the repressive and closed Russian republic of Chechnya. France utilizes deepfake technology not to fabricate truth, but rather to obscure the identities of subjects risking their lives to expose persecution. By altering his at-risk subjects’ appearance—and employing an aesthetic that’s both convincing and deliberately imperfect—France is able to document action while reminding the audience of the ongoing risks for those on screen.

Tickets: $15 / $11 senior and students / $9 youth (ages 3–17) / discounted for MoMI members ($7–$11). Order online. Please pick up tickets at the Museum’s admissions desk upon arrival. All seating is general admission. Review safety protocols before your visit.
