Anthony Mann: Mean Streets and Open Spaces

Apr 19 — Apr 27, 2014

Organized by guest curator Max Alvarez

Hollywood filmmaker Anthony Mann specialized in two genres that seem disparate: the film noir, featuring nocturnal and claustrophobic dramas, and the psychological western, with its narratives set against wide-open landscapes. Mann bridged these genres with his masterful control of space, his ambivalent and secretive anti-heroes, and his complex view of violence. This series featuring eight of Mann’s greatest noir and western films, including his breakthrough successes T-Men (1947) and Winchester ‘73 (1950), is presented in conjunction with the release of Max Alvarez’s new book The Crime Films of Anthony Mann (2013, University Press of Mississippi). All films are presented in 35mm archival prints.
