Curators' Choice 2019

Dec 20, 2019 — Jan 22, 2020

This survey of some of the greatest films of 2019 also serves as an annual celebration of the vibrancy and elasticity of the cinematic arts. Starting with January festival premieres and continuing through holiday releases, 2019 was among the best film years in memory. From festival favorites like The Souvenir, American Factory, Rafiki, Black Mother, and The Hottest August, to direct-to-streaming releases such as Homecoming: A Film by Beyoncé and Cutting My Mother, to theatrical hits like Midsommar: Director’s Cut, Ad Astra, and The Lighthouse, to underappreciated masterstrokes such as Peterloo and Our Time, this year’s selections attest to a robust state of the art. In-person guests include filmmakers Ari Aster, Alex Ross Perry, Kent Jones, Penny Lane, Brett Story, Julia Reichert and Steve Bognar, and others to be announced soon. The series kicks off with a week-long 35mm engagement of Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood.

Organized by Curator of Film Eric Hynes and Assistant Curator of Film Edo Choi.
