Dir. Dan Sallitt. 2019, 94 mins. With Tallie Medel, Norma Kuhling. A Grasshopper Film release. The latest from truly independent New York filmmaker Dan Sallitt—his first feature in eight years—centers on Mara and Jo, twentysomethings who have been close friends since middle school. Jo, the more outgoing of the two, is a social worker who runs through a series of brief but intense relationships, while the quieter Mara writes fiction and bounces among teacher’s aide jobs while trying to land a position in elementary education. It soon becomes apparent that Jo, despite her intellectual gifts, is unreliable in her professional life, losing and acquiring jobs at a troubling rate. Over the course of a decade, the more stable Mara sometimes tries to help, sometimes backs away to preserve herself, but never abandons her powerful childhood connection with Jo. View trailer.

A bittersweet breakup movie—only in this case, the relationship is platonic. It’s rare in cinema to see such a fine-grained portrait of friendship, particularly a spiky female one. Sallitt’s thoughtful, incisive film articulates the feeling of an intense companionship fading imperceptibly over time, and shows such relationships to be just as complex, tempestuous and painful as those of the romantic variety.”—Jamie Dunn, Sight & Sound
