See It Big! Jack Fisk

Mar 11 — Apr 1, 2016

Production designer. Art director. Model maker and carpenter. Master of the 360-degree set. Since the early 1970s, Jack Fisk has been a secret weapon for some of America’s most celebrated auteurs, including Terrence Malick, David Lynch, Paul Thomas Anderson, and Brian De Palma. From the house on the hill in Days of Heaven to the Jamestown settlement in The New World, and from the towering oil rigs of There Will Be Blood to the frontier hellscape of The Revenant, for which he was nominated for his second Academy Award, visionary contemporary cinema owes a great debt to the artistry of Jack Fisk. This extensive retrospective includes all of Fisk’s collaborations with the above mentioned directors, early B-movie fantasias Messiah of Evil and Darktown Strutters, Stanley Donen’s arch-affectionate retro musical Movie Movie, and his directorial debut, Raggedy Man (starring Sissy Spacek, Fisk’s partner since they met on the set of Badlands in 1973).

See It Big! is an ongoing series organized by Reverse Shot editors Michael Koresky and Jeff Reichert, Chief Curator David Schwartz, and Associate Film Curator Eric Hynes.
