Tommaso

Dir. Abel Ferrara. 2019, 115 mins. With Willem Dafoe, Cristina Chiriac, Anna Ferrara. Renegade auteur Abel Ferrara’s latest film is a typically daring and raw work of autofiction, starring four-time Academy Award nominee Willem Dafoe, Ferrara’s frequent muse. Dafoe plays Tommaso, an American expat filmmaker living in Rome who must come to terms with his younger wife’s desire to change the rules of their marriage. As he begins working on his next project, the ex-addict, newly insecure, culturally disoriented Tommaso begins to lose his grip on reality, while also struggling to support his beloved wife and child—all of which Ferrara explores with tactile, fearless sensitivity and surrealistic gusto. A Kino Lorber release. View trailer.

“Crackle[s] with ideas and empathy, as Ferrara’s best work always does.”Glenn Kenny, The New York Times. A New York Times Critic’s Pick.
